![]() I feel its more snappy with the near final 4.1 beta cycle. Its still nothing like using Voiceover on an iPhone! Responsiveness is quick now for a two-finger single tap, to pause and to resume speech. Yes, the Voiceover flicking and touching experience does feel lighter and more flowing, but not dramatically so. Bear Notes devs have not focused on Voiceover for the first release, so it could be a custom interface issue. I don’t know where this problem arises from, hoping its not the Dev kit. The latest Shazam and Bear writing apps for the Watch don’t appear to work with Voiceover. Similarly, its not even possible to adjust voiceover voice speed without your phone – poor decisions when the watch is now marketed as a stand-alone device. I asked how can someone now display a barcode (such as on an ticket) when out, if this feature is now gone?Īpple Accessibility informed me that screen curtain is disabled when bar codes are presented in Wallet. ![]() I feel this was a completely unnecessary deletion! This means you now need to go to the watch app on your phone to change this setting. Its pleasing that Apple have responded to many of the issues I’ve raised about the Watch since the 4.0 release.Ī small but major deletion/change in watchOS 4 is the ability to turn screen curtain on and off on the watch has been removed from the watchOS 4 settings app. I’ve purchased each major series upgrade to the Apple Watch and have just received a Space Grey Series 3 Sport with LTE. The Take Me Home bug where the Phone’s location and not the Watch location was used has also been fixed in 4.2, making the Watch a more self-sufficient navigation aid. Music and accessing Apple Music via the watch works reasonably well, but the quality is clearly less than via the phone. The combination of a single AirPod in your pocket and the watch is very freeing indeed. I’d have to say that my milage in general has been mixed when making or taking FaceTime Audio calls using the watch. Standard voice calls are therefore a better option when not connected to your phone or Wifi. I’ve tried a FaceTime audio call using LTE, but this was very unsatisfactory. I didn’t have LTE access initially, but since I have enabled it, I’m really impressed with how smoothly it works! I’ve taken several calls on the watch – with and without an AirPods while walking our puppy as well as very reliable access to Siri on the watch. There are still some issues with AirPods randomly choosing to connect to the Watch while already connected to the iPhone, and still no true multi-point connection to both devices simultaneously, but overall the situation is now workable. the real Siri voice has been enabled for Voiceover users and using Hey Siri you can reliably have Siri speak at a similar volume to your Voiceover volume setting. In particular, the prolonged audio ducking bug has been fixed, making it possible to enjoy music on the Watch. Now that WatchOS 4.2 is out and lots of small but significant issues have been addressed, I think the latest watch and operating system are a great contribution to an accessible IOS environment. Previously updated to include some LTE comments, additional notes on touch-screen sensitivity and responsiveness, and a section on the Siri Watch face with Voiceover Introduction Last updated 6 December 2017 to include changes for watchOS 4.2 including real Siri voice support. This is a live review as I gain more experience with the new Watch hardware and watchOS 4 I’ll update the document.
